Athletics participation, either organized or self-imposed, can do so much for an individual.
It creates comradeship between teammates and competitors alike. It builds bodies as
well as character. It pushes individuals to achieve more as a group than they can accomplish
on their own.
Athletics also brings communities together. We only need to view the full stadiums and
arenas or remember the “Power of Purple” that swept the state in 2005 when the University
of Northern Iowa football team advanced to the national championship game.
This publication has been launched to celebrate all the athletes in the Cedar Valley –
collegiate, prep, club, recreational – and even the “weekend warrior.”
The publication is not meant to replace your daily newspaper or newscast. As a quarterly,
it’s here to dig deeper, to find the unusual, the fun, and the nuggets of information that not a
lot of people are aware of. We want to bring these stories to all of you. We all read and hear
about the star athlete’s accomplishments on the field and court. Maybe there’s something of
interest about that athlete, or about the non-starter, off the field that is interesting or unusual.
Maybe your neighbor has accomplished something athletically that isn’t in the forefront of
the news.
To bring these stories to the public, we need your help. Please contact us with story ideas.
Don’t be afraid. You know your friends, children and coaches better than we do. Let us know
about these special people so we can tell their stories.
We also need your help in listing your activities in our Calendar of Events. We can research only so much, so if you want your events listed or have story ideas, please send them
to nancy@cedarvalleyathlete.com, or to joyce@cedarvalleyathlete.com or submit them with our contact form.
Each quarter, we bring you interesting stories about coaches, student-athletes, administrators,
or your neighbor. We have articles on former or present Cedar Valley residents
who might have been better known in the past, but for various reasons have moved away or
dropped off the radar. We include articles on wellness, and columns by Eric Braley and yours
truly, The Sports Chicks. We have dedicated a page to the budding athlete, the younger set.
Read and enjoy.
