Texas Reconsiders Steroid Testing

According to the Associated Press (Jan. 10, 2009), Texas state lawmakers are deciding whether to keep the $6 million steroid testing program intact, scale it down, or whether to eliminate it totally. Boys and girls in all sports have been randomly selected for the testing. Results have shown little to confirm that steroid use is a real problem.

The point of testing was to act as a DETERRENT against steroid use, not to catch teenagers using drugs, said state representative Dan Flynn.

According to a University Interscholastic League report released Dec. 1, the first 10,117 tests produced just four cases of steroid use. Another state senator, Dan Patrick, called the testing a “colossal waste of taxpayer money”.

With less than a full year of testing completed, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said it’s too early to determine if major changes should be made.
